Melbourne rental raises eyebrows: ‘Very exploitative’

A hidden detail of a rental listing for a $270 a week room in Melbourne has sparked outrage online, with observers describing it as “not only appalling but delusional”.

The ad, which was shared in a rental Facebook group, shows a seemingly normal two bedroom, one-bathroom apartment in Melbourne’s CBD.

The room was advertised as close to public transport, with internet and utilities included and is shared with “clean and tidy” housemates.

However, renters in the Facebook group quickly noticed the offer was too good to be true, with one detail being brought to light.

The small $270 room is actually a shared room.

Images of the room show a small, single bed wedged in the corner of the room next to a double bed.

It is the smaller bed that is on offer.

“Two people in room including you,” the ad reads.

“Total three people in house, $270/week/person.”

Those in the comments section of the advertisement were shocked by the listing, with many labelling it as “exploitative”.

“Tell me you’re deluded,” one person said.

“This is not only appalling but delusional,” another added.

“Very exploitative,” a third piped in.
