Michelin honors 3 newly acclaimed restaurants in the Bay Area

On Tuesday night, chefs from various locations in California gathered at the Chabot Space & Science Center in the Oakland Hills to celebrate the winners of the Michelin Guide awards. I was fortunate enough to receive an invitation as the event was held in my backyard. During the ceremony, six new restaurants were inducted into the prestigious one-star club, three of which were from the Bay Area. These winners include Aphotic, a seafood restaurant in San Francisco, Auro, a restaurant in Napa Valley, and Nari, a Thai restaurant in San Francisco. Chez Noir, located in Carmel-By-The-Sea, also received a star, while Pomet from Oakland was recognized for its sustainable practices with a green star. The event was filled with extravagant booths offering delectable treats such as caviar and rose lychee macarons. As I wandered around, I even spotted famous chefs like Melissa King from “Top Chef.” The atmosphere was vibrant with excitement as the winners were announced, although I could only watch the live stream of the ceremony from the theater since only the chefs were allowed inside the planetarium. Nonetheless, the winners expressed their joy and gratitude, including Pim Techamuanvivit, the chef-owner of Nari, and Peter Hemsley, the chef at Aphotic. Additional awards were also presented, recognizing outstanding service, young chefs, and sommeliers. Pomet, an Oakland restaurant that focuses on the farm-to-table movement, received an award for its sustainability efforts alongside Aphotic. While a few Bay Area restaurants unfortunately lost their Michelin stars, the ceremony ended on a high note with the three-Michelin-star winners celebrating with wine. As the event concluded, I left with a macaron in hand, eager to fill my stomach after the mesmerizing culinary experience.
