Police, State Emergency Service officers and the family’s loved ones had been searching for Hussein since he was last seen running from Auburn Memorial Park towards the intersection of Station Rd and Rawson St about 10.30am Saturday.

Serious concerns were held for his welfare, as Hussein lives with down syndrome and autism and is non-verbal.

Superintendent Simon Glasser, Commander Auburn Police Area Command said on Monday Hussein was found inside a stairwell at a medical centre in Auburn by a member of staff.

“As a result of our public messaging, all our police and SES volunteers in the street that got the message across, one of the staff members thought to check the stairwell and as a result, we found him,” he said.

“He was found well … he smiled, and he’s been taken to hospital just for a check-up.

“But on all accounts, he’s doing well.”

Police said a community member spotted Hussein near Norval St, Auburn about 9pm Saturday.

Glasser had earlier told reporters on Monday, searchers were experimenting with playing music liked by the 12-year-old in the hope of drawing him out if he was hiding or sheltering.

“I do know he is fond of particular music, so it is a method to try and draw him out if he is hiding or taking shelter somewhere,” Glasser said.

Hundreds of police and SES volunteers continued their search on Monday morning in the area, before he was found.
