Mitsubishi Unveils 2024 L200 / Triton: Enhanced Ladder Frame and Fresh Diesel Engine

Following an extensive teaser campaign, Mitsubishi has finally unveiled the new Triton. Referred to as the L200 in some markets, this midsize pickup truck is entering its sixth generation and features a fresh design both inside and out. The vehicle has undergone several changes, including the use of a newly developed ladder frame for increased torsional rigidity by 60%. The Triton is available in double cab, club cab, and single cab body styles and benefits from a lighter body thanks to the use of high-tensile steel. The carbo bed has also been redesigned, lowered by 45mm (1.77 inches) to improve cargo maneuverability. The truck now has increased practicality with the addition of a step in the bumper corner. Although Mitsubishi hasn’t provided specific details, they have mentioned that the new Triton is larger than its predecessor but has managed to minimize weight gain by using lighter steel. The vehicle offers two four-wheel-drive systems: Super Select 4WD-II and Easy Select 4WD. The former includes selectable modes such as 2H (RWD), 4H (4×4), 4HLc (4×4 with a locked center differential), and 4LLc (low-range with locked center differential). Additionally, the Triton has seven driving modes: Normal, Eco, Gravel, Snow, Mud, Sand, and Rock. The suspension has been completely revamped with a new double-wishbone front and lighter leaf spring setup at the rear. Models equipped with the Super Select 4WD-II system benefit from Active Yaw Control (AYC) for improved cornering. The vehicle also includes hill descent and hill start assist systems. As for the engine, Mitsubishi has only mentioned a new 2.4-liter diesel engine, available in three power outputs: 148 hp (110 kW) and 330 Nm (243 lb-ft) of torque, 181 hp (135 kW) and 430 Nm (316 lb-ft), and a top configuration with 201 hp (150 kW). The engine can be paired with a six-speed automatic transmission or a shift-by-wire manual. The Triton is presented in various colors, including Yamabuki Orange Metallic, Blade Silver Metallic, White Diamond, Solid White, Jet Black Mica, and Graphite Gray Metallic. The interior of the Triton has also been updated, featuring analog dials and separate controls for climate settings. The dashboard layout is straightforward and functional, with easy access to the driving mode selector and 2WD/4WD switch. The Triton is currently available for sale in Thailand and will gradually be introduced in ASEAN and Oceania, with plans to go on sale in Japan in early 2024, marking its return after 12 years.
