Moment e-bike rider crashes in Sydney tunnel

Cyclists are being warned to keep out of Sydney’s high-speed traffic tunnels, with new videos showing bike riders risking their lives and big fines.

Authorities are concerned someone could be badly injured or even killed by the behaviour.

The joyride was captured by Amy Macintosh as friend Kobi Klyde drove through the tunnel.

“He looked before he crossed, and then he just hit the ground,” Macintosh told 7NEWS.

“The speed through there is 80km — we were just shocked because it’s not every day you see someone on an e-bike in the tunnel.”

Bikes are banned in the Sydney Harbour Tunnel, Lane Cove Tunnel, Cross City Tunnel, Eastern Distributor and M5 East, with a $302 fine for those who ignore the rule.

That penalty can be up to $2,200 if it goes to court.

The fine for not wearing a helmet — another $387.

Transport for NSW Centre for Road Safety chief Bernard Carlon said it was about using common sense.

“There’s really clear signage saying that bicycles are prevented in the tunnel,” he told 7NEWS.

One of the most common reasons why cyclists end up in the tunnel is because they are using a navigation app, he said. In searching for directions, many forget to tell the app they are not driving a car

“So using an app, setting it to bicycle mode will prevent this sort of thing from happening,” Carlon said.
