MotoGP 2023: New rule triggers penalty risk for four riders after Indonesian GP

Following the Indonesian GP, which has changed the complexion of the ongoing MotoGP season, four riders are now at risk of receiving penalties in future races after being found to have breached the new tyre pressure regulations during the round 15 at Mandalika.
The rule, enforced from Silverstone GP midway through the season, requires riders to log at least half the race distance on 1.9 bar (27.6psi) of pressure on the front tyre and 1.7 bar (24.7psi) on the rear tyre. The four riders who face the prospect of being penalized are Marco Bezzecchi, Aleix Espargaro, Raul Fernandez, and Franco Morbidelli.

Before the Indonesian GP, only Maverick Vinales was found to have breached the law since it was introduced. He was given a warning and on his second infringement, the Spaniard will be subject to a three-second time penalty. While none of the riders were penalized for the infringement, as it was the first offense under the new rule, they have now joined Vinales and been given a warning.
MotoGP has also stated that it intends to escalate the penalty for tyre pressure breaches in the future, with the end goal being disqualification.
The grid has been vocal about its disapproval of the new law with some riders stating that it will make the races boring while some said it has impacted their performances. Furthermore, another drawback of the mandatory tyre pressure is that the more ballooned a tyre is, the less grip it has on the tarmac.
Meanwhile, the Indonesian GP has turned the championship on its head as Factory Ducati’s ‘Pecco’ Bagnaia put on a brilliant speedshow at the Mandalika. As Jorge Martin crashed from the lead, throwing away the championship, Pecco fought his way to the top of the rostrum following a difficult weekend which saw him being dropped to Q1 and starting P13 on the grid.
