National watchdog finds Canadian senator in violation of ethics code for rant during ‘Freedom Convoy’

The Senate ethics watchdog has determined that Conservative Senator Michael MacDonald violated the code of conduct during the “Freedom Convoy” protest last year by engaging in a colorful rant and refusing to cooperate with an investigation. In a video, MacDonald can be seen berating Ottawa residents who complained about the demonstrations and describes them as overpaid and underworked. He also refers to his wife as a derogatory term for a self-entitled woman. MacDonald apologized for his remarks, citing alcohol consumption as a factor. The watchdog found that MacDonald breached six sections of the code governing senators and had a significant impact on the institution. The investigation began with complaints from nine of MacDonald’s peers, and he acknowledged that he had fallen short. The watchdog asked MacDonald to undertake three actions, two of which he followed: apologizing in the Senate and on social media. However, MacDonald rejected the proposed action of noting to colleagues that his conduct could merit a censure, calling it unnecessary. The watchdog ruled that MacDonald’s lack of cooperation was a flagrant disregard for the investigation process and recommended sanctions or penalties by the Senate. This is the first time a senator has refused to comply with the inquiry process and argued for his own inquiry process. The Senate’s conflict-of-interest committee will receive the report and may hold hearings, although the Senate is currently adjourned. MacDonald has been a senator since 2009.
