Buckingham Palace is to unveil a series of never-before-seen photos as part of a new exhibition at the King’s Gallery.

Among them will be a portrait taken for Catherine, Princess of Wales’ 40th birthday and a new shot from Prince William and Kate’s wedding in 2011.

The collection will show royal photography spanning the last century.

The oldest image is a 1923 engagement shot of Prince Albert and Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, who later became King George VI and Queen Elizabeth.

More than 150 photos will be on display, with a range of very private photos to formal and official shots.

“We have analogue technology on one side, digital technology (on the other), monochrome, colour and a private commission and the official (images),” exhibition curator Alessandro Nasini said in a statement.

“I think it gives the range … of the exhibition which goes from the very private to the very public to the official.”

His favourite of the collection is one of the late Queen Elizabeth II wearing a black cape against a plain white background.

Nasini said it showed “the queen, perhaps more as a woman, as the person who came up behind the monarchy”.

Ahead of the exhibition’s launch on May 17, several shots have been shared to show visitors what they can expect.

Another from 1964 shows Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Margaret, Princess Alexandra and the Duchess of Kent all holding babies.

Royal obstetrician Sir John Peel delivered all four of the babies within two months.

One image from 1943 shows King George VI sitting at his desk, surrounded by his family: his wife Queen Elizabeth (the Queen Mother), the then-Princess Elizabeth (later Queen Elizabeth II) and Princess Margaret.

Never-before-seen shots from Queen Elizabeth’s 1953 coronation will be on display, along with one from King Charles’ coronation in 2023.

Princess Kate’s 40th birthday portrait is on display, near an 1894 portrait of Alexandra, Princess of Wales — which it is said to resemble.

Meanwhile, the photo from William and Kate’s wedding shows them seated in the throne room at Buckingham Palace following the ceremony at Westminster Abbey.

The newlyweds are surrounded by the young bridesmaids and page boys.

The exhibition runs from May 17 to October 6 at the King’s Gallery, a public art gallery at Buckingham Palace.

The gallery was formerly known as the Queen’s Gallery.
