New Video by Tyler Childers Shares a Moving Gay Love Story

Fans eager to change country music’s reputation were surprised when Jason Aldean’s song, “Try That in a Small Town,” with its controversial lyrics that promote vigilantism and xenophobia, reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. However, singer-songwriter Tyler Childers is unintentionally providing a counterpoint with his music video for his latest single, “In Your Love.” Directed by Bryan Schlam and produced in collaboration with queer writer Silas House, the video tells the story of two male coal miners in 1950s Appalachia who fall in love despite facing homophobia. The video ends on a bittersweet note, but a four-leaf clover offers a glimmer of hope. Since its release, “In Your Love” has gained over 3.4 million views and received praise from Billboard and Rolling Stone. The song will appear on Childers’ upcoming album, “Rustin’ in the Rain,” set to be released in September. Childers explained in an interview that he wanted to honor his gay cousin by featuring a same-sex romance in the video. Childers’ intention was not to critique rural America but to shed light on the LGBTQ+ community’s experiences in Appalachia. Other country artists praised his work for its positive message and authentic storytelling. Despite his success, it is unlikely that Childers could have predicted the popularity of Aldean’s song when he recorded “In Your Love.” Nonetheless, critics have praised Childers’ song for its progressive and forward-thinking approach compared to Aldean’s.
