Severe flooding is also expected in China and typhoon Egay is approaching the Philippines and Taiwan, while travellers are warned of dangerous and extreme heat in Europe, North America and Asia.

SmartTraveller, an Australian Government travel service, warned for all those travelling or planning to travel in the coming weeks to “know how to stay safe”.

“Local authorities in some destinations are advising locals and tourists to stay inside due to the extreme heat,” it warned.

“This includes advising people to avoid popular tourist attractions, particularly in Europe.”

The service added although “it may be disappointing to miss out” it’s important to “always follow the advice of local authorities”.

“Heat exhaustion can be life-threatening if not taken seriously,” it added.

In Greece, an average of 50 new wildfires have broken out daily for the past 12 days. On Sunday, 64 new blazes were recorded.

The Rhodes fire roared down mountain slopes, burning homes and cars and leaving livestock dead on the roadside as they tried to escape.

Authorities said no serious injuries were reported, but hospitals and health volunteers provided first aid to tourists and others, mostly for the effects of heat and dehydration.

Temperatures reached low 40s in parts of the Greek mainland Monday, a day after soaring as high as 45C.

Evacuations were also ordered on the western island of Corfu, where more than 2000 people were moved to safety by land and sea, as well as on the island of Evia and in a mountainous area in the southern Peloponnese region.
