NPR: Lawsuit Filed by Ex-Northwestern Volleyball Player Accusing University of Hazing

A lawsuit has been filed by a former volleyball player against Northwestern University, claiming that hazing occurred within the women’s volleyball team. The player, referred to as “Jane Doe 1” in the lawsuit, is the first female athlete from the university to speak out amidst reports of hazing in the football program. The lawsuit, filed on Monday, alleges that Jane Doe experienced “hazing, harassment, bullying, and retaliation” as a member of Northwestern’s volleyball team. Named as defendants in the lawsuit are Northwestern University, its president Michael Schill, former president Morton Schapiro, the school’s board of trustees, university vice president for athletics and recreation Derrick Gragg, former university vice president for athletics and recreation James Phillips, and head volleyball coach Shane Davis. Jane Doe is seeking damages of at least $50,000 and a jury trial. The lawsuit states that the former athlete suffered an unspecified injury in March 2021 while participating in conditioning exercises as punishment for allegedly breaking the team’s COVID-19 guidelines. Jane Doe claims that the volleyball coaching staff, team members, and trainers watched as she ran the exercises. Following the injury, the university conducted an investigation and suspended the team’s coach and coaching staff. Northwestern University spokesperson Jon Yates stated that the school is committed to holding its athletic department accountable. Attorneys representing the former athlete have filed multiple lawsuits over alleged hazing in the football program. Additionally, another lawsuit involving the football program is expected to be filed on behalf of several Northwestern players. These hazing allegations come after the firing of former head coach Pat Fitzgerald and head baseball coach Jim Foster due to reports of a toxic culture within the programs.
