Nurse Shares Lesser-Known Method to Treat Burns and Safeguard Your Child in Common Emergencies

A former children’s ICU Emergency nurse has taken to TikTok to share a vital tip that could potentially save a child’s life in the event of a serious burn. Beki Giunta, a mum from Queensland, expressed her concern about the lack of knowledge people have about what to do if a child gets burnt. She mentioned that the most common burns she used to treat were from teas, coffees, and two-minute noodles. Giunta also shared a personal experience when her 18-month-old son pulled boiling hot tea down on himself. Despite being a safety-conscious parent and a registered nurse, accidents like this can still happen. Giunta revealed her advice in the video: the first thing to do is call an ambulance, then take off the child’s clothing and place them in a shower or under continuous cold running water. The child should stay under the water for a minimum of 20 minutes, even if they protest, as this can save their life and alleviate pain. Giunta emphasized that ice, oil, or butter should never be applied to burns, just cold running water until medical help arrives. Her tips helped her son avoid scarring. She concluded by stating that her advice applies to all burns and adults as well.
