On the Podcast: What’s Cool in Mexico City Right Now?

It takes guts to cold-call designers and ask for an internship, but Karla Martinez de Salas did just that when she was a marketing student at the University of Arizona. Now, she is the head of content for Vogue México y Latinoamérica, putting groundbreaking stars including indigenous actor Yalitza Aparicio and Dominican model Lineisy Montero—wearing her natural hair—on its cover.

Karla recently sat down with Chloe and Chioma to discuss Vogue’s recent Mexico City portfolio—after joining Chloe for a boxing class earlier that morning (she does it all!). The feature, which celebrates the city as a hub of fashion and creativity (highlighting models, chefs, artists, actors, architects, and more), is timed to Dia de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead. The holiday is one of remembrance; an occasion for families to honor loved ones who have passed away.

Chloe and Chioma also get into Karla’s career trajectory, and the challenges of covering such an expansive region—from the differences in language and dialect across Latin America, to the various cultural reference points.

At the end of the show, Vogue friends (and IRL friends) José Criales-Unzueta and Naomi Elizee pop into the studio to share this week’s fashion updates, including a discussion of CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund winner Melitta Baumeister and runner ups Henry Zankov (of Zankov) and Rachel Scott (of Diotima). They also chat about the iconic Maggie Smith Loewe campaign, something that all of us Potterheads (J.K. Rowling aside) can get behind. And don’t forget to check your credit limits, because Phoebe Philo’s new collection is dropping Monday.
