OpenAI: Google’s Gemini AI model may be ready to take on OpenAI’s GPT-4

Google announced its next-generation foundation model, Gemini, at I/O 2023. At that time, the company said that the model was under training and it would be available once it is fine-tuned and rigorously tested for safety. It is now being reported that the company has provided the model’s early access to a small group of companies, suggesting that it could soon be available for businesses soon.
According to a report by The Information, giving outside developers access to the software means Google is getting close to incorporating it in its consumer services, such as Bard AI chatbot.
The publication cited three people with direct knowledge of the matter as saying that the company will soon start selling the Gemini model to businesses through the company’s cloud unit, called Google Cloud Vertex AI service.
What is Gemini?
Gemini is a large language model (LLM) – the underlying technology of AI chatbots. Google said that it will enable users to generate content based on text inputs, summarise articles based on what users want to read like email drafts and music lyrics, and is also capable of helping software engineers write code.
Google said that Gemini was created from the ground up “to be multimodal, highly efficient at tool and API integrations and built to enable future innovations, like memory and planning.” It claimed that the model shows “impressive multimodal capabilities” that were not seen in prior models developed by the company.
Google to take on OpenAI
Gemini is Google’s big bet to take on OpenAI, the company that developed GPT-4. This model has already started to bring returns for the company as Microsoft has already incorporated the tech into Office 365 apps, and OpenAI’s GPT-4 and DALL-E models. Additionally, financial institutions and other businesses are already paying to access the model.
For Google, the stakes of Gemini’s launch are high as the company intensified investments in generative AI this year. While reports said the company was playing catch-up after Microsoft-backed OpenAI launched ChatGPT last year, company CEO Sundar Pichai said that the company wanted to ensure the safety of its models before releasing them for businesses.
Google is also planning to bring Gemini to power a wide range of services, from its Bard chatbot to enterprise apps. By doing so, Google hopes to better compete with Microsoft Azure in providing AI capabilities to apps.
