Outlander and Line of Duty star Brian McCardie dead at 59

Scottish actor and writer Brian McCardie, best known for his roles in the TV series Outlander and Line of Duty, has died. He was 59.

McCardie’s sister Sarah broke the news on X that her brother died suddenly at home on April 28.

No cause of death has been revealed.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Brian James McCardie (59), beloved son, brother, uncle and dear friend to so many,” her post from April 30 said.

“A wonderful and passionate actor on stage and screen, Brian loved his work and touched many lives, and is gone much too soon.

“We love him and will miss him greatly; please remember Brian in your thoughts.”

She said funeral arrangements would be announced in the days ahead.

“As a family, we would ask for privacy at this time,” she said.

McCardie’s agency United Agents said it was “lucky” to have represented “an actor of such great talent”.

“We are shocked and so deeply saddened by the tragic news of Brian McCardie’s sudden death,” it said in a statement.

“He was an actor of such great talent who we were lucky to represent, and our thoughts are very much with his family and friends at this difficult time.”

Other of McCardie’s roles included BBC prison drama Time (2021) and the feature action thriller Speed 2 (1997) alongside Sandra Bullock.

He also had a role in the historical drama film Rob Roy (1995) opposite Liam Neeson.

Following the news of his death, others who worked with the star shared tributes.

“Just devastated by this. Nobody made me laugh like you. Proud to have been your friend and will miss you more than words can say. Rest in peace old friend,” fellow Scottish actor Simon Weir said.

Director Alec Bowman Clarke shared a message, revealing he had even written a part for him in an upcoming project.

“I spoke to him a few times about projects and always found him genuine, passionate, generous and funny,” he said.

Producer Paul Larkin said: “Brian was a brilliant friend and we had many discussions about mental health issues where he was a fantastic help to me.

“As well as that; he was a phenomenal actor. Sleep tight Brother.”
