Perth man Matthew Stevenson beaten and mugged outside nightclub in Kuta, Bali, now trying to get home

A Perth man who was allegedly beaten and mugged outside a Bali nightclub is now struggling to get home in time for his brother’s wedding.

Matthew Stevenson, 27, from Midland, said his cheek was broken when he was set upon by a group of men outside the Engine Room in Kuta on Friday night.

Stevenson said his passport was also stolen in the attack and he is now trying to find or replace it — and get medical clearance — in time to fly home for his brother’s wedding.

Stevenson said he went to the Engine Room club about 11.30pm on Friday and stayed for about two hours, during which time he danced with a woman he believes was the sister of one of his attackers.

He says one man pushed him while inside the club but his friends helped de-escalate the situation and they thought it was resolved.

But video from outside the club shows Stevenson being put in a headlock and suffering multiple blows to his face and head.

“I got hit and then just mobbed, I would say, by a group of five or six people,” Stevenson told 7NEWS.

“I was just trying to defend myself.

“Even in the video you can see … I look kind of lifeless.”

Immediately after the attack, Stevenson says he went to a hospital where he said he was turned away because he didn’t have any money — which had been stolen, along with his passport and phone.

He said he went back to his hotel where staff members then took him back to hospital and paid for his bills themselves.

“They’ve gone above and beyond,” Stevenson said.

He said he feels he was lucky to escape with just a broken cheek and split scalp.

“There’s always cases of that happening, people hit in the head and dying,” he said.

“Or incurring brain damage … it could have been much more severe.”

One man is in police custody after he was pulled off Stevenson by a friend and handed over to police, who are investigating the attack.

No other arrests have been made.

The group of men allegedly involved are understood to hail from New Zealand.

Security cameras from the nearby Sky Garden nightclub have allegedly captured the same group in other altercations.

Local business owners say they want to welcome well-behaved tourists, and behaviour such as the alleged attackers’ hinders that.

Local tattoo shop owner Ady Santoso said such behaviour “spoils” things for locals.

Time is now running out for Stevenson to find or replace his stolen passport and pass a medical clearance to fly home for his brother’s wedding on Wednesday.

“Obviously flying with a head injury isn’t a good thing,” he said.

He said missing his brother’s wedding would be a bigger blow than anything his alleged attackers inflicted on him.

“I’ve lost my phone, I’ve lost my passport,” Stevenson said. “I’ve got 5000 rupiah stolen. They even stole my hat.”
