Philz Coffee has closed its headquarters in San Francisco’s Dogpatch neighborhood and moved to Oakland, as first reported by the San Francisco Examiner

Both the popular coffee chain’s corporate offices and cafe at the 1258 Minnesota St. address have shuttered as a result.

“With nearly all our corporate team fully remote, the existing lease no longer aligned with our needs as a company,” Philz Coffee CEO Mahesh Sadarangani said in a statement provided to SFGATE. “As a result, we have decided to close the Dogpatch location and move our corporate headquarters to our roasting facility in Oakland, CA.”

Eligible retail team members have been offered positions at other nearby Philz locations, Sadarangani’s statement said. Back in October, Philz closed its original San Francisco coffee shop at 24th and Folsom after 20 years.

Initially, the company told its employees the 24th Street closure was happening because the company chose not to renew its lease, according to Mission Local. However, the building is owned by an LLC managed by Philz co-founder Jacob Jaber, Mission Local reported. Employees told Mission Local they suspected other reasons for the closure, from high maintenance costs to the flagship store’s reputation as the “rebellious store,” with employees previously having tried to unionize, according to Mission Local.

The company has about a dozen remaining cafes across the city, from Embarcadero to Noe Valley to Ocean Avenue.

“So happy to welcome Philz to their permanent home right here in the Town,” Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao said on X following the news of the coffee chain’s move. “It’s not just about coffee; it’s about community, and we’re honored that a major local favorite has chosen Oakland as their home.”
