NEW DELHI: The committee led by Prime Minister Modi is set to convene on Wednesday to select a candidate for the position of election commissioner.
A vacancy is imminent within the three-member poll panel as Election Commissioner Anup Chandra Pandey prepares to resign from office on February 14.
According to the Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Act, a search committee headed by the law minister and comprising two Union secretaries will short-list five candidates for the consideration of the prime minister-led selection committee.
Among the members of the selection committee are a Union minister appointed by the Prime Minister and Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, the Congress leader in the Lok Sabha.
It’s noteworthy that the selection panel retains the authority to consider candidates who may not have been initially shortlisted by the search committee.
Pandey’s retirement at the age of 65 is imminent, just days before the anticipated announcement of the schedule for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, slated for April-May.
Prior to the enactment of the new law, the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners rested with the President based on the government’s recommendation.
Presently, alongside Anup Chandra Pandey, Arun Goel serves as an election commissioner, while Rajiv Kumar holds the position of Chief Election Commissioner.
