PM Modi launches Global Biofuel Alliance: India’s green energy assault

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday launched the Global Biofuel Alliance during the 18th G20 summit held in Delhi during the weekend. As per the MEA, the Alliance intends to expedite the global uptake of biofuels through facilitating technology advancements, intensifying utilization of sustainable biofuels, shaping robust standard setting and certification through the participation of a wide spectrum of stakeholders.
So far, 19 countries and 12 international organizations, both members and non-members of G20, have agreed to be a part of the union. Brazil, India, and the US, being some of the largest producers and consumers of biofuels, are the founding members of the GBA.

The Indian auto sector is expected to be one of the biggest beneficiaries of the GBA. The sector is currently facing a number of challenges, including rising fuel prices and stricter emission norms. Biofuel can help the auto sector to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels and meet emission norms.
For instance, after having achieved 10 percent ethanol blending in June 2022, ahead of its original target of November 2022, the government is now targeting 20 percent blending by 2025.
With technological advancements, the government is pushing towards adopting green mobility options such as electric vehicles, E20 fuel-powered vehicles, and is aiming at hydrogen-powered vehicles in the future. Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari recently unveiled the hydrogen-powered Toyota Innova prototype.
On a whole, India is aiming at carbon neutrality by 2070. And the GLA could prove out to be a crucial initiative towards achieving the target.
