Police investigate shooting in parking lot at Fred Meyer on Market

This story was updated at 4 p.m.

Three people were injured in a parking lot shooting Monday morning at the Fred Meyer on Market Street NE in Salem.

Salem Police confirmed the shooting happened in the store parking lot, posting on X (formerly Twitter) at 9:49 a.m. that the injured were transported for medical treatment. Police also reported all involved were accounted for, and there was no continued threat to the public.

No other information about the injured was provided at that time, but an afternoon press release indicated a woman and two men were transported to Salem Health with varying gunshot wounds. The woman and one of the men remain hospitalized. Police did not release their names.

It is unknown whether the store, referred to locally as the East Fred Meyer, had to close or go into lockdown during the incident, or whether customers or employees were ever in danger.

The manager at the store referred all questions to a corporate media contact, who requested questions via email but did not answer them. Instead, a regional Fred Meyer spokesperson provided this statement to the Statesman Journal:

“We are deeply saddened by the incident that occurred in the parking lot outside our Fred Meyer in Salem, Oregon. We are cooperating with local law enforcement and to protect the integrity of the investigation, we are referring questions to the Salem Police Department.”

All entrances to the Fred Meyer parking lot were closed immediately following the shooting. By midmorning, the Lancaster Drive entrance reopened, and all entrances were open by early afternoon.

A large section of the parking lot in front of the west end of the store remained cordoned off through the afternoon for the ongoing investigation. Patrol cars remained on site near the taped-off section.

Salem Police officers responded to the scene at approximately 7:35 a.m. after multiple 911 calls were made, including one by an adult male who reported he had been shot.

At 8:14 a.m., Salem Police posted an advisory on social media, reporting police activity in the parking lot of the Fred Meyer in the 3700 block of Market Street.

At one point during 911 dispatch traffic, it was reported a person involved in the shooting “ran into Elmer’s.” Moments later, an officer reported a male with a gunshot wound to his right thigh had been detained and asked dispatch to send a medic unit.

An employee at the nearby Elmer’s told the Statesman Journal the restaurant remained open during the incident despite the front entrance being blocked for a time by police tape. Customers entered from a side entrance, according to the employee, and officers remained on scene.

According to dispatch traffic, the other two people injured were a female with a gunshot wound to her abdomen and a male who had been shot twice in the back.
