The alleged murder of a 10-year-old girl by her older teenage sister has been described by police as “violent” and “unthinkable”.
The younger sister, was allegedly stabbed multiple times by her 17-year-old sister at the family home in Boolaroo — approximately 20km west of Newcastle — about 3.45pm on Monday.

Paramedics treated the younger girl at the home, but she died.
The 17-year-old was arrested by NSW Police at the home, and was later charged with murder (DV).
She did not appear before a magistrate or apply for bail when her case was briefly mentioned at Broadmeadow Children’s Court on Tuesday.
NSW Police Detective Superintendent Danny Doherty said police will allege the 17-year-old was “solely responsible” for the death of the 10-year-old.
“The 10-year-old suffered multiple stab wounds to her upper body area,” he told reporters on Tuesday.
“What we allege is this was a violent act, but it’s also a tragic incident.
“It’s unthinkable that this could happen to a 10-year-old.”
Doherty added their thoughts are with the family.
“The investigation is still ongoing, and it is a sensitive investigation as you can imagine,” he said.
“The family are at home still grieving and trying to come to terms with what happened to the 10-year-old.”
The family were not known to police, Doherty added.
Police said the weapon was “a sharp instrument” but could not provide any further details.
Neighbours have since told 7NEWS they are in deep shock, following the tragedy.
“I’m shocked. That’s really terrible … I’m shaking,” local Rosemarie Forstner said.
“It’s really nice here, but you don’t think things like this are going to happen in your street,” another resident, Cindy Holloway added.
A crime scene has been established at the home, which is being examined by forensic police.
