Poll finds majority of Canadians view military as outdated and obsolete – National perspective

More than half of Canadians (56 per cent) view the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) as “old and antiquated,” according to a recent Ipsos poll conducted for Global News. The poll, conducted in June, found that only one in five Canadians see the CAF as a modern institution, with 29 per cent considering it outdated. Ipsos CEO Darrell Bricker suggests that increasing funding for the armed forces is seen as a solution by most respondents. 75 per cent of those polled believe Canada should increase defense spending to protect its own territory and sovereignty. Concerns about military readiness are primarily driven by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and China’s actions in the Taiwan Strait. Retired major-general Denis Thompson emphasizes the need for modernized equipment across all branches of the Canadian Forces. Ottawa has committed to $8 billion in new military spending over the next five years and views defense spending as an investment for deterrence purposes. A larger number of young people (36 per cent of 18-34 year-olds) believe Canada should leave defense up to the United States, while the majority of the older cohort prioritize defense spending. The US continues to call for increased Canadian defense investment. Awareness of the CAF’s day-to-day operations is low among Canadians, but the war in Ukraine has increased public awareness. However, issues such as the high cost of living can overshadow potential threats from nations like Russia in the minds of regular Canadians. Canadians feel that the military should have a larger role in the Arctic, particularly in monitoring ship traffic, increasing military bases, and considering the purchase of nuclear submarines. The survey was conducted between June 19 and 20, 2023, with a sample of 1,000 Canadians aged 18 and older.
