Pollution Concerns Arise for Sydney’s Beaches Following Heavy Rainfall

Swimmers are being warned not to enter the water at a handful of popular beaches across Sydney.

The NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment warned beachgoers should avoid swimming at a string of beaches from Coogee in the eastern suburbs to North Curl Curl Beach in the Northern Beaches.

The warning comes due to an elevated risk of bacteria in the water due to heavy rainfall.

“As a general precaution, swimming at Sydney’s ocean beaches should be avoided for up to one day after heavy rainfall or for as long as stormwater is present,” the government’s Beachwatch warns.

“The most obvious signs of stormwater pollution are water discolouration as well as debris in the water and on the tide line.”

Bronte Beach was among the worst affected beaches, as were Manly, Queenscliff, North Steyne and South Steyne.

Milder health warnings were also issued for Clovelly, Bondi Beach, Gordons Bay, Maroubra and Malabar.

It comes after Sydney was battered with heavy rainfall overnight.

The Bureau of Meteorology’s forecast for Monday in Sydney said there was a “high chance of showers along the coastal fringe” and a “medium chance elsewhere”.

Showers are expected to ease on Monday afternoon.
