Product Recall: Tesla recalls almost every car it has ever sold in the US: Here’s why

Tesla is recalling over 2 million vehicles in the U.S., marking the largest-ever recall by the electric automaker. The recall aims to install new safeguards in Tesla’s Autopilot advanced driver-assistance system, addressing safety concerns raised by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The safety regulator has been investigating whether Tesla vehicles ensure drivers pay sufficient attention while using Autopilot. The recall covers nearly all Tesla vehicles on U.S. roads and is intended to mitigate the risk of crashes resulting from driver misuse of the Autopilot system. The NHTSA investigation, ongoing for over two years, highlighted instances of fatal crashes involving Autopilot.
Tesla’s Autopilot is designed to enable automatic steering, acceleration, and braking within a lane, with enhanced features on highways. One specific component, Autosteer, maintains speed and lane position. The recall responds to NHTSA’s findings that Autopilot’s controls may not be adequate to prevent driver misuse, increasing crash risks. Tesla stated that it disagrees with NHTSA’s analysis but will deploy an over-the-air software update to enhance controls and alerts, encouraging drivers to adhere to their continuous responsibility when Autosteer is engaged.

The recall raises concerns about road safety, with critics calling it overdue. U.S. Senators Ed Markey and Richard Blumenthal urged NHTSA to continue investigations, emphasizing the importance of safety in Tesla vehicles. Tesla’s move comes after the U.S. Justice Department issued subpoenas related to its Full Self-Driving (FSD) and Autopilot systems, with reports of a criminal investigation. Tesla’s previous recall in February addressed issues with the Full Self-Driving Beta software. The NHTSA investigation into Autopilot will remain open as it monitors Tesla’s actions to remedy the identified risks.
