Prime energy drinks, which were endorsed by YouTube stars Logan Paul and KSI, are being recalled in Canada following a request from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to investigate the caffeinated beverages. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) confirmed the recall after conducting a health risk assessment. Health Canada regulations state that energy drinks should not contain more than 180 milligrams of caffeine per serving and should include warning statements to protect sensitive populations, including children. The CFIA has become aware that some stores in Canada have been selling Prime Energy without approval, and the agency is working to address this issue. Prime Energy contains 200 mg of caffeine per serving, 20 mg over the maximum amount permitted in Canada. Non-compliant products can face consequences such as warnings, detention, recalls, or prosecution. Prime Energy’s recall also follows a call from US Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer for the FDA to launch an investigation into the product due to concerns about its marketing to youths. The drink, which was initially launched in the UK and banned by some schools, has faced criticism for potential health impacts such as heart problems, anxiety, and digestive issues. While the FDA does not set a limit on caffeine for those under 18, the American Academy of Pediatrics advises against youth consuming caffeine altogether. Prime’s Hydration product, which does not contain caffeine, will not be recalled.
