PALO ALTO – A 24-year-old Redwood City man died in a hit-and-run crash early Sunday on Highway 101 in Palo Alto, authorities said.
The collision, which involved four cars, happened around 1:15 a.m. in northbound lanes of the freeway at San Antonio Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The CHP said the Redwood City man was traveling northbound in a 2011 Chevrolet Camaro when he was rear-ended by a 2019 Mazda CX-5. The Chevrolet was left disabled in the fast lane, where it was then hit by a 2019 Honda Accord and a 2019 Nissan Altima.
The man was pronounced dead on the freeway. The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office will release his identity once it is confirmed and his next of kin is notified.
Officers found the Mazda at the scene, but not its driver, who left the scene before they arrived, the CHP said.
The driver of the Honda was taken to a hospital with major injuries, according to the CHP. A passenger in the Nissan complained of pain but was not taken to a hospital.
Northbound Highway 101 was closed for several hours while the CHP investigated the crash.
