A man who has spent almost two decades in prison for the highly publicized murder of Redlands teenager Kelly Bullwinkle has been released this week. Despite opposition from numerous family members, friends, and San Bernardino County prosecutors, the Board of Parole Hearings upheld a previous decision to grant parole to Damien Matthew Guerrero. The decision was made after Governor Gavin Newsom reviewed the case and referred it back to the board for a final determination. The decision comes just before the 20-year anniversary of Bullwinkle’s murder on September 13, 2003. Guerrero, along with his co-defendant Kinzie Gene Noordman, was arrested and charged with her murder. Guerrero pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and has been serving his sentence at Chuckawalla Valley State Prison since September 2008. Noordman was convicted of first-degree murder and has been serving her sentence at the California Institution for Women since May 2005. During a parole hearing, Guerrero expressed remorse and claimed rehabilitation while detailing his personal growth in prison. However, Bullwinkle’s family and friends argued against his release, describing him as dangerous and refusing to take responsibility for his actions. Prosecutors also raised concerns about Guerrero’s lack of accountability and manipulation. Despite the opposition, Guerrero was granted parole, and he is expected to be released within 120 days.
