Renault’s Electric R5: A retro-inspired revival for sustainable mobility |

Renault debuted its long-awaited electric R5 at the Geneva Motor Show, aiming to boost its electric vehicle sales by reviving its classic 1972 model. Drawing inspiration from the original R5 and Super 5, which collectively sold over nine million units, the new model incorporates iconic design elements such as vertical tail-lights and vibrant colors, reported reuters.
Renault’s approach diverges from retrofuturism, emphasizing the importance of updating old models at the right juncture in the brand’s history, as highlighted by Gilles Vidal, Renault’s design director, during the R5 presentation near Paris. Positioned as part of Renault’s drive for affordable EVs, the initial launch in the latter half of the year will feature a 52 kWh battery offering a 400 km range, followed by a less potent 40 kWh version with a 300 km range, priced at 25,000 euros.
With bidirectional charging capabilities, the R5 will rely on Envision battery packs until local production commences in 2025. Renault stands as the sole major European automaker at this year’s Geneva show, marking the first event since the pre-pandemic year of 2019.
