Irish singer Sinéad O’Connor, famous for her music and personal life, has passed away at the age of 56, according to RTE, Ireland’s public broadcaster. The news was confirmed by RTE, who shared a statement from the family: “We are deeply saddened to announce the death of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy during this difficult time.” No cause of death has been announced yet. O’Connor’s debut album, The Lion and the Cobra, received critical acclaim in 1987, but it was her second album, I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got, released in 1990, that propelled her to fame. Her rendition of the Prince song “Nothing Compares 2 U” reached No. 1 in 1990 and won her several awards. Over the years, O’Connor became embroiled in controversy, which overshadowed her career. She was open about her struggles with addiction and mental health in her 2021 memoir. O’Connor is survived by her three children, although her 17-year-old son Shane passed away in 2022.
