Report: Air Canada’s July On-Time Arrival Rate Falls Below 52%

According to a report by Cirium, less than 52% of Air Canada’s 36,017 flights arrived on time last month. This ranked Air Canada last among the 10 major North American airlines in terms of punctuality in July. WestJet, on the other hand, ranked seventh with just under 62% of its 17,405 flights reaching their destinations on time. Alaska Airlines took first place with 82% of its 36,960 flights arriving on schedule. Air Canada attributed its low ranking to high demand for air travel, flights operating at near-full capacity, and air traffic control staffing shortages. They also mentioned that unusual weather conditions, particularly in the US, affected their operations. Similarly, WestJet cited weather and third-party delays as factors affecting their punctuality. The Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA) has received recommendations from advocacy groups for improving passenger protection regulations, including narrowing the definition of “extraordinary circumstances” and tightening refund deadlines. Both Air Canada and WestJet claimed to have implemented measures to reduce the impact of delays.
