Report: Genesis Allegedly Killing the G70

The Genesis G70 is arguably the closest any automaker has come to replicating the excellent driving experience of the legendary BMW 3 Series. It’s extremely impressive. However, it seems that not many customers are buying into its exceptional driving dynamics. A report from Korean outlet Korea JoongAng Daily states that Genesis is considering discontinuing the G70 due to its poor sales.

Genesis pleasantly surprised the automotive world with the G70. Here was an outstanding sport sedan from a brand that had only been around for a little over ten years, created by a brand that used to be considered a joke (Hyundai). Based on a platform shared with the equally remarkable Kia Stinger, buyers could choose between rear or all-wheel drive and two engines: a turbocharged I4 or a twin-turbo 365 horsepower V6. It was released for the 2019 model year in the U.S., with a refresh in 2022.

However, like some other models in its segment, the G70 has never achieved strong sales figures according to the sales charts. Only 12,649 units were sold last year, and just over 7,000 have been sold so far in 2023. Sales in Korea have also been declining since 2019, with only 6,087 units sold in 2022 and a mere 2,099 units sold thus far in 2023. European sales are even worse, with only 96 units sold in 2022.
