“They were confronted by a huge, intense fire, threatening to spread to adjacent homes,” Fire and Rescue NSW said.

Residents living in homes behind the petrol station were at home at the time of the blaze.

About 15 residents were rushed to safety as fire crews cooled the venting gas cylinders.

“All the neighbours are running out, I didn’t see much, I didn’t look, there was too much heat,” one resident told reporters.

“(The flames) were as high as the tree. So I saw that, I’m like, yep I’m out of here.”

It took about 50 firefighters three hours to gain control of the blaze.

No one was injured.

They stopped the fire spreading to neighbouring homes and prevented the flames spreading to the service station’s fuel tanks.

The scene remains taped off on Thursday morning, with fire investigators set to examine the scene in a bit to determine the cause of the blaze.
