Rollover crash on I-280 leaves one dead

A rollover crash on Interstate 280 near San Mateo early Sunday left one person dead.

The crash was first reported just before 3 a.m. on Sunday at the interchange with Highway 92, the road leading to the San Mateo Bridge. According to authorities, callers to 911 said that a black vehicle had rolled over with the driver still inside and that another vehicle had collided with an unknown object in the southbound lanes of the highway.

California Highway Patrol officers responded to the scene. After a preliminary investigation, officers said that the first vehicle was southbound on I-280 when it made a sharp left turn for “unknown reasons.” As a result, the car drove off the road into a concrete pillar supporting the Highway 92 overcrossing before coming to rest in the fast lane.

According to Redwood City CHP, a second vehicle then crashed into the disabled vehicle at 75 miles per hour. Police say that driver’s attention was drawn elsewhere when the crash occurred.

The driver and the passenger of the second vehicle were able to exit their vehicle, and the passenger was transported to Stanford Hospital. The driver of the first vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. The person has not been identified.

Officials said the driver of the second vehicle was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol. It’s unknown if the first driver who crashed was under the influence.
