Samsung Developing Dust Protection Technology for Foldable Phones

Samsung is currently working on developing technology to protect its foldable smartphones from dust. The company recently unveiled its fifth generation of Galaxy foldable devices, which are slimmer, lighter, and faster than previous models. However, due to the nature of foldables and the many moving parts involved, dustproofing has proven to be a challenge. The president and head of Samsung Electronics’ mobile business, Roh Tae-moon, acknowledged the consumer demand for dustproofing and stated that efforts are being made to achieve this feature. However, he noted that customers will have to wait a little longer for it to become available. Despite this setback, Samsung’s newly released Galaxy Z Flip5 and Galaxy Z Fold5 are expected to be among the top three flagship smartphones in the domestic market this year. Samsung’s foldable products are also projected to exceed 30 million units in cumulative sales for the year. While Samsung accounted for the majority of the global foldable phone market share last year, its overall market share is gradually decreasing as more competitors enter the market. Roh emphasized that it is natural for market share to decrease as more players join, but Samsung aims to lead innovation in the foldable market. Raju Pullan, Senior Vice President of Mobile Business at Samsung India, highlighted the popularity of foldable smartphones among aspirational Indians in both metro and small-town areas. Samsung is making these devices more accessible through flexible payment options and expects to see significant traction in the market.
