San Jose Sharks’ Calen Addison explains misconduct vs. Arizona Coyotes

SAN JOSE – Defenseman Calen Addison said Tuesday he received a 10-minute misconduct in the San Jose Sharks game against Arizona over the weekend for something he said to a Coyotes player.

Addison was assessed the penalty with 8:09 left in the third period of Sunday’s game at SAP Center after he got involved in a brief verbal altercation with Coyotes rookie forward Logan Cooley.

Addison and Cooley came together and had words with each other after a stoppage in play in the third period. That’s when the official gave Addison the misconduct, and the Sharks defenseman left the ice surface and went back to the dressing room. Cooley was not penalized.

What Addison exactly said is unclear, although Sharks coach David Quinn described it as normal “banter” between opposing players.

Addison, who turns 24 on Thursday, said he didn’t get a specific explanation from Sunday’s officials as to why he was given 10 minutes. The Sharks were trailing by one goal at the time but lost the game 5-2, so Addison did not return to the ice.

“Just kind of go into battle with the guy and kind of exchange words back and forth,” Addison said Tuesday before the Sharks played the Calgary Flames. “Nothing crazy. Heat of the moment. We talked about it, addressed it and that’s really all I’ve got to say.

“Just like any other battle and he said some things I didn’t like, so I just went up to him and said a couple of things, just asked what’s up, and that was it.”

Addison and Quinn talked about Sunday’s incident on Tuesday morning.

“There was a reasonable explanation for it,” Quinn said. “(Addison) and I talked about both situations and it’s been put to bed.”

Still, it’s unusual for a player to be given a misconduct for chirping a competitor. Quinn said if the Sharks want further clarification on the matter, general manager Mike Grier would be the one to contact the NHL.

“I didn’t get an in-depth explanation. I know it was nothing that he said to the referee. The referee told me that,” Quinn said when asked if he knew what was said between Addison and Cooley. “You’ve got to be fair to the player. Initially, I was (upset), right? There might have been deeper consequences, but everybody’s chirping out there.”

The misconduct was Addison’s second in as many days.

Against the St. Louis Blues on Saturday, late in the first period, he received 24 minutes in penalties, picking up two minors (cross-checking and a two-minute misconduct), a 10-minute misconduct for abuse of officials, and another 10 minutes as part of a game misconduct.

Saturday’s penalties were related to what Addison said to officials, while Sunday’s came after his run-in with Cooley.

Addison, who has 12 points in 55 games with the Sharks this season, averaging 17:24 per game, will be back in the lineup Tuesday.

“Obviously, I want to be out on the ice helping my team win,” Addison said. “Looking at the time of the game I want to be on the ice. So, nothing crazy and like I said, just move on to the next. Stuff happens in the heat of the moment to the game.”

WOLF SIGHTING: Gilroy native Dustin Wolf will start for the Flames on Tuesday, marking his first NHL start at the Shark Tank.

Wolf, who turns 23 next week, has made two starts against the Sharks in his career, but both of those came in Calgary. He earned his first NHL win against San Jose at the end of last season, but lost to the Sharks on Feb. 15, allowing six goals on 21 shots.

Wolf started four games at SAP Center when played with Calgary’s AHL affiliate in Stockton, going 4-0-0 with a .953 save percentage during the 2021-2022 season. That was the Barracuda’s last season at SAP Center before they moved to Tech CU Arena next to Sharks Ice in San Jose.
