Shilpa Shetty, who made her foray into streaming with Rohit Shetty’s Indian Police Force, recently acknowledged being typecast in the 90s that limited actresses to either glamorous or serious roles.
“Either you were glamorous or you were a great actress. There was no middle ground. It was unfortunate, and you had to hedge your bets and decide which way you want to go. Many a times, the makers would take that call for you and say ‘you are better with glamorous parts’,” Shilpa told DNA.
Though Shilpa said that she is grateful for her contribution to entertaining cinema in the 90s, she admitted feeling saturated as an artist in that phase. “It’s very hard to be intelligent and play a bimbette. But I did it. I must be a fantastic actor (laughs). But I did start feeling saturated as an artiste,” she stated.

She further added that she made a conscious decision to embrace roles in social dramas like Phir Milenge and Life in a Metro in her 30s, showcasing her versatility as an actress. Reflecting on this phase, she said, “You have to decide whether you want to continue doing the same thing or if you’re okay to sit at home and do fewer. But that is a big risk.”

Sharing insights into why she chose the role in the Indian Police Force, Shilpa said that she made a choice that from now on, whatever part she will play, she wants to gratify her audience and give them something she can surprise them with. Hence, Sukhee happened and simultaneously this.
