Incredible and terrifying footage captured by Dekker’s passenger shows the snake flailing in the wind and wrapping itself around the car’s side mirror.

However, Dekker told Sunrise once they identified it was a harmless green snake they began to enjoy the creature’s “curiosity and beauty”.

“Initially it was a real shock,” he said.

“But we started filming about 30 seconds after and by that time we’d kind of calmed down, and we were just like well we will just go along for the ride.

“So, we just kept filming until we could pull over after the highway.”

Dekker says he pulled over when he got a chance, but by then the snake had disappeared.

“So I went to grab a stick because I wanted to go all Steve Irwin and try and do it properly,” he said.

“But by the time I went and found a stick, it slithered back under the bonnet, and it was gone.

“So I lifted the bonnet up, had a look, couldn’t find it, and so we just drove home.”

Dekker, who said he grew up in the bush, knew he was safe and incredibly added that the snake was still living in his car.

“It’s pretty much become part of the family,” he said.

“We’ve named it Hitch.”
