Sleep expert says eating this every day food for dinner can promote better rest

Some foods and drinks are known to be counterproductive when trying to get a good sleep, and are therefore advised against.

However, there is one specific fruit that can help get better rest that many people may not be aware of, according to an expert on the subject.

Eating a banana for dinner may hold the key to a restful night’s sleep, as suggested by The Sleep Charity, a dedicated organisation specialising in sleep support.

The charity recently unveiled its top five recommendations for achieving better sleep quality in 2024, with the consumption of fruit before bedtime leading the list.

According to The Sleep Charity, bananas, in particular, can contribute to a more peaceful slumber owing to their elevated levels of magnesium and potassium, known for their muscle-relaxing properties.

Bananas also contain the amino acid tryptophan, a precursor to brain-calming hormones that facilitate relaxation, prompting your body to feel lighter.

The positive impact extends further, as fruit consumption is linked to the stimulation of melatonin production.

Melatonin, a naturally occurring hormone in the body, plays a significant role in regulating sleep patterns, further emphasising the potential benefits of incorporating fruit into your evening routine for a more tranquil and restorative sleep experience.

A study published in a special issue of Antioxidants in Health and Disease has identified grapes, tart cherries, and strawberries as the most potent sources of melatonin among fruits.

Other habits that might help improve sleep patterns are turning off screens that could potentially suppress the body’s production of melatonin.

Doing relaxing relaxing activities like reading or taking a bath shortly before bed, as well as meditating, could also contribute to better rest.

The Sleep Charity’s deputy CEO, Lisa Artis, told Sky News how important it is to have a good sleep cycle, in addition to an overall healthy lifestyle.

She said: “Sleep is hugely important to leading a healthier and happier life, and we want everyone to share that sentiment and understand the importance of sleep as part of a balanced and healthy lifestyle.

“Building a good sleep routine, and sticking to it, will help increase positivity and reduce levels of stress, meaning people can start the New Year feeling refreshed.”
