This randomized trial, involving over 80,000 women aged 40 to 80 in Sweden, assigned participants to either an intervention group, where AI supported radiologists in reading mammograms, or a control group, where mammograms were read by two radiologists without AI support. The intervention group had a cancer detection rate of 6.1 per 1,000, while the control group had a rate of 5.1 per 1,000. The study concluded that AI-supported mammography screening is safe and reduces screen-reading workload without increasing false positive rates. The use of AI in healthcare and research has shown promising results in areas such as breast cancer diagnosis, with AI outperforming humans in accuracy. Breast cancer is a significant cause of cancer-related deaths in Canadian women, highlighting the importance of advancements like AI in improving detection and treatment.
