New Delhi: Subrata Roy, the visionary founder of Sahara India Pariwar, passed away on November 14, 2023, at the age of 75. Born in Araria, Bihar, on June 10, 1948, Roy left an indelible mark on the Indian business landscape, building an extensive empire that encompassed diverse sectors such as finance, real estate, media, and hospitality. His entrepreneurial spirit and unwavering determination transformed him into a towering figure, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire generations to come.

Sahara India Pariwar said in a statement, “It is with profound sadness that Sahara India Pariwar informs the demise of our Hon’ble ‘Saharasri’ Subrata Roy Sahara. Saharasri ji an inspirational leader and visionary, passed away on 14th November 2023 at 10.30 pm due to cardiorespiratory arrest following an extended battle with complications arising from metastatic malignancy, hypertension, and diabetes.”

“His loss will be deeply felt by the entire Sahara India Pariwar. Saharasri ji was a guiding force, a mentor, and a source of inspiration for all who had the privilege to work alongside him,” the Sahara group further said.

Samajwadi Party (SP) shared a post on his demise as, “Death of Saharashri Subrata Roy ji, very sad. May his soul rest in peace. May the bereaved family members get the strength to bear this immense sorrow. Heartfelt tribute!”

Subrata Roy’s entrepreneurial journey commenced with his mechanical engineering degree from the Government Technical Institute in Gorakhpur. His foray into the business world began in Gorakhpur, followed by his acquisition of Sahara Finance, a struggling chit fund company, in 1976. Through his astute business acumen and unwavering determination, Roy transformed Sahara Finance into Sahara India Pariwar, which would eventually flourish into one of India’s most prominent conglomerates.

Subrata Roy’s leadership propelled Sahara’s expansion into a diverse range of businesses. In 1992, the group ventured into the media industry with the launch of the Hindi language newspaper Rashtriya Sahara. The late 1990s saw the initiation of the ambitious Aamby Valley City project near Pune, and Sahara’s foray into television with Sahara TV, later renamed Sahara One. Roy’s bold acquisitions of iconic properties like London’s Grosvenor House Hotel and New York City’s Plaza Hotel in the 2000s captured global attention, further solidifying Sahara’s position as a prominent conglomerate, as per a report by India Today.
