‘Sudden and Abrupt Closure of St Peters’ Town and Country Hotel in Sydney’

An iconic pub in Sydney’s inner west has “abruptly” closed its doors, leaving the local community devastated.

The Town and Country Hotel in St Peters announced via Facebook on Tuesday that it had ceased trading following challenges with the pub’s landlords.

“It is with great sadness we write this message to inform you that we’ve had to cease trading as our doors have been locked suddenly and abruptly,” the pub’s owners wrote.

“We’ve made many attempts to work harmoniously and reasonably with our landlord on building repairs, continuous complaints from neighbours and also our rent, resulting in an unsuccessful mediation.”

The pub went on to thank the many customers who had walked through its doors over the years.

“In and amongst it all, we can safely say we’ve had the time of our lives, enjoying many live music events, weekly events, many schnitzels, pies and beers.”

“As we sign off and move into the future, once again we extend our thanks and love to all.”

Established in 1881, the pub was made famous thanks to Australian country singer Slim Dusty’s popular song “Duncan”.

The successful hit song was penned by a man named Pat Alexander, who at the time was selling life insurance.

In a subsequent article written by Alexander, he explained he was attempting to sell insurance to a factory owner named Duncan Urquhart, who invited Alexander to have a beer with him at a nearby pub — The Town and Country.

After hearing Alexander’s demo, Slim Dusty took interest in the song. He would go on to record it and film a music video inside the pub.

Following the news of the pub’s closure, locals took to social media to express their disappointment and share fond memories.

“Devastating. Will always be my favourite pub,” one person wrote.

“I’m so shocked, and so sorry it’s come to this, after all the love and effort you invested. The TCH became my home away from home, I enjoyed many nights at karaoke, and dinner with mates and neighbours,” another said.

“The welcoming, safe haven you created will be sorely missed. Best wishes to the team. I hope you can move on to bigger and better things.”
