Filming on Superman: Legacy has finally begun with David Corenswet taking the cape from Henry Cavill.

The DC Studios blockbuster kicks off a fresh reboot for the franchise helmed by James Gunn, who is also directing the movie.

Set in a universe where there are already other superheroes, the new Man of Steel’s first outing kicks off the DCU’s Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters.

Now the filmmaker has unveiled an official first look at Kal-El’s new chest emblem, which fans notice was inspired by comic book miniseries Kingdom Come.

Gunn has also shared that the movie will no longer be called Superman: Legacy, but simply Superman, the same title as the original 1978 movie starring Christopher Reeve.

Posting a photo of an ice-coated Superman chest emblem, which is the Kryptonian symbol for hope, Gunn enthused over the start of filming.

The Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy director wrote: “Overjoyed to be announcing the start of principal photography on SUPERMAN today, February 29, which just so happens to be – coincidentally and unplanned – Superman’s birthday.

“When I finished the first draft of the script, I called the film Superman: Legacy.  By the time I locked the final draft, it was clear the title was SUPERMAN.  Making our way to you July 2025.”

Gunn has previously said of the film’s synopsis: “[The movie] tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”

The DC blockbuster co-stars Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane.

Superman hits cinemas on July 11, 2025.
