High-profile neurosurgeon Charlie Teo has been found guilty of unsatisfactory professional conduct and accused of displaying a “substantially experimental” approach while performing surgeries on two patients at a Sydney hospital. As a result of the investigation by the NSW Health Care Complaints Commission, Teo will need written support from another specialist before performing certain procedures. The commission has reprimanded Teo and imposed conditions on his registration. The investigation was prompted by complaints from two patients diagnosed with terminal brain tumors who experienced catastrophic outcomes after surgeries in 2018 and 2019. During the hearings, Teo faced allegations of misleading patients, conducting risky surgeries without proper informed consent, charging inappropriate fees, and behaving inappropriately towards patients and their families. The commission’s report concluded that Teo exercised poor judgment by proceeding with high-risk and inappropriate surgeries that were not supported by medical literature. It also stated that Teo’s attitude and rationale for conducting the surgeries were substantially experimental and should have been conducted in a clinical trial or subject to ethical scrutiny. As a result of the investigation, Teo will need written support from another surgeon before performing certain procedures. He has the right to appeal the decision within 28 days.
