OAKLAND — An Oakland man was arrested in connection with an August fatal shooting in an encampment, but has avoided murder or manslaughter charges thus far.
Instead, the 35-year-old man has been charged with evading San Leandro police officers who were attempting to arrest him on a Ramey murder warrant in connection with the Aug. 24 killing of Baltazar Alcaraz. On Jan. 3, prosecutors charged him with evading police and possessing a stolen vehicle, both felonies.
Alcaraz was shot and killed 2:45 a.m. on Aug. 24 at an encampment below Interstate 580 on the 3400 block of Telegraph Avenue. Witnesses later told police that the 35-year-old man — identified by his nickname — actually intended to kill another person when he inadvertently shot Alcaraz, authorities said.
On Dec. 29, San Leandro police spotted the 35-year-old man in a stolen car in San Leandro and attempted to pull him over. When he refused to stop, police deployed a tire-popping device to disable the car, which made it all the way to Oakland before stopping.
The man attempted to run away from officers after he crashed the car, but police say they were able to catch up and arrest him. He remains in Santa Rita Jail in Dublin, with bail set at $105,000.
