Sydney Man’s Struggle to Keep his Beloved Home: ‘This is Where I Belong’

A Sydney man is facing an uphill battle with the NSW government after he was slapped with an eviction notice telling him to leave his home of more than 26 years.

Peter Carver, 74, lost a Supreme Court ruling last Friday, with the state government claiming his home, one of a string of cottages along the bank of the Georges River, is Crown Land.

The government claims Carver is a squatter at the home on Old Ferry Road and has recently decided to clear the space along the river for the public.

But Carver, who is actually a solicitor himself and has practised in conveyancing for 45 years, argues the house is heritage-listed and has been there since the 1930s.

Carver has told 7NEWS he won’t be giving up without a fight.

“I love my little place. This is my home … this is not just a house,” he said.

“I’ve been here since 1996.”

“I won’t be kicked out.”

But Minister for Lands and Property, Steve Kamper, told 7NEWS he believes the cottages are “dilapidated and dangerous” and “contain asbestos”.

Carver, on the other hand, says he doesn’t care and plans on filing an appeal in the court of appeal, and has vowed to take the matter all the way to the high court if he has to.

“I won’t be kicked out,” he said.

“If something happens to me whilst I’m fighting it’s been a good fight … I don’t mind.”
