SAN JOSE — Police have arrested a teenager who was driving a stolen SUV that struck and killed a man walking in San Jose, officers said Monday.

The victim of the fatal accident, which occurred in the 1100 block of Winchester Boulevard, has yet to be identified.

The driver was identified only as a juvenile male.

The crash occurred on Sunday, Sept. 3, at approximately 3:22 a.m. the San Jose Police Department reported Monday.

“A 2019 Hyundai SUV, occupied by a lone juvenile male driver, was traveling northbound on Winchester Boulevard when it left the roadway and struck an adult male pedestrian on the sidewalk,” the police department stated.

The vehicle continued north on the sidewalk and smashed into a tree near Walgrove Way, according to police.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. San Jose police officers arrested the driver; he was taken to a hospital with injuries that were described as non-life-threatening.

“It was later discovered that the Hyundai was an unreported stolen vehicle,” authorities said in a release that was prepared by San Jose Police Officer Steve Aponte.
