The 49ers are abandoning an entire summer of Eagles trash talk

Deebo Samuel has stopped talking trash about the Philadelphia Eagles, who beat the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC championship game on Jan. 29, 2023, ahead of their first matchup since that game.

But now that a much-anticipated rematch is finally here, some 304 days later, the Niners are trying to put their trash talk toothpaste back into the tube — even after the Eagles’ Haason Reddick called them out for “a lot of boo-hoos last year, a lot of crying” on Sunday.

Samuel was asked about his prior comments on Monday and said he “don’t regret nothing I said,” but has removed any lingering resentment toward the opponent ahead of the trip to Philadelphia.

“I don’t have any feelings right now, just see how it goes,” Samuel said. “It’s not about revenge. It’s another game on the schedule and we’re going to treat it like any other game.”

Aiyuk had a similar reaction on Monday, saying, “That’s old,” when asked about his offseason comments about Philly. Like Samuel, Aiyuk tried to completely downplay the importance of this game.

“Another opportunity to go out there and keep trending in the right direction,” Aiyuk said. “That’s all we are trying to look to do. We have another opportunity this week in Philly to do that.”

It’s a stark contrast from February, which included Samuel directly calling out the Eagles’ James Bradberry after Philly lost the Super Bowl to Kansas City, saying the cornerback was “trash.” Bradberry was asked about those comments on Wednesday and pushed back at those providing him extra motivation.

“I just approach it one day at a time,” Bradberry said. “Of course, I don’t really necessarily like what he said. I wish he would have used a better word to describe my play. But it is what it is. At the end of the day, all I can do is control my work ethic and what I do during the day.”

Ahead of last year’s game, it seemed like the two sides really admired each other ahead of the title game bout, which the Eagles won 31-7. This time, it’s a similar sound from Eagles coach Nick Sirianni.

“I just know that this game is going to be about two good teams coming in here and having a good game,” Sirianni said. “I’ve got a lot of respect for the guys over there and Coach Shanahan and his coaches. There is a lot of good players on the San Francisco 49ers, some of the best players in the world.”

Sirianni also downplayed the “rematch” angle that so many 49ers players were calling for after Purdy’s injury. The two teams are different this time, after all, with no single person making that clearer than former Eagle and current Niner defensive tackle Javon Hargrave.

But make no mistake, Sunday is set to be one of the biggest NFL regular season games in a long time — after all, it’s not often that a 10-1 team wih a healthy quarterback is a home underdog like the Eagles are. However this game ends, it’s fair to expect some chatter to kick back up late Sunday evening.
