The Hybrid Renaissance Continues With Two New Porsche Panamera Hybrids

Porsche announced Tuesday that its executive sedan is gaining two new hybrid powertrains to appease the hybrid-hungry car buying public. The Porsche Panamera 4 E-Hybrid and Panamera 4S E-Hybrid join the lineup under the all-out performance monster, the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid to provide buyers with more electrified options.

Compared to previous hybrid Panameras, all new E-Hybrid models have 45 percent more battery capacity, higher charging speeds, and more powerful electric motors. The new Panamera 4 E-Hybrid uses a reworked 2.9-liter twin turbocharged V6 engine which when combined with the electric motor produces an overall power output of 463 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. The Panamer 4S E-Hybrid uses the same powertrain but produces more power at 536 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque.

When that power reaches the road, Porsche claims the new Panamera 4 E-Hybrid will go from zero to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds and top out at 174 mph. The Panamera 4S E-Hybrid with its 73 extra horsepower and 74 extra lb-ft of torque achieves a zero to 60 time of 3.5 seconds and a top speed of 180 mph.

Both of these hybrids come with an impressive array of standard equipment for a Porsche, including standard adaptive two-chamber air suspension and Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), lane change assist with rear cross traffic alert, soft close doors, 14-way comfort seats, and a heated steering wheel.

Charge times are impressive for the wrong reasons, however, with a miniscule 11-kW on-board AC charger that requires 2.5-hour charge times for this PHEV. While this charging speed seems underwhelming, it’s about average for the class. The 2024 Mercedes-Benz S580e 4MATIC takes about the same time to charge its hybrid battery on the standard charger, but Mercedes offers an optional 60 kW DC charger for the PHEV S-Class that allows for much faster charging than either the standard S-Class or the Panamera E-Hybrids.

Porsche did not released EV range estimates or fuel economy numbers for these spicy sedans, but it did release pricing. The Panamera 4 E-Hybrid starts at $117,495 including destination charges, nearly $16,000 dearer than the base Panamera, and about $7,000 more than the 2023 E-Hybrid. The Panamera 4S E-Hybrid will start at $128,795 including destination.
