Rita said one of her darkest moments happened just seconds before she was due to sing Grateful from the film Beyond the Lights at the 2015 Academy Awards.

“I was nominated Song of the Year at the Oscars and I couldn’t believe it,” she said.

“So every song nominated performed – live TV, over a billion people. My nerves genuinely, I think, took over.”

The singer said her anxiety was so bad, she was left physically sick.

“Two seconds before I went out, I threw up,” she said.

“I just remember looking out at the crowd and the lights just went on me. And I just closed my eyes and I sang.

“All I remember is my legs going like that [makes shaking motion]. And if you can just imagine the heels going [banging together]. “

Rita said the experience was so stressful, it’s had a lasting effect.

“I can’t watch the performance back to this day, because it just brings back all of those feelings,” she said.

As an afterthought , she added: “It was fun though!”

Rita shared the story in the lead-up to 17-year-old Giann Jordan’s blind audition on The Voice.

The Brisbane teen was so taken with nerves, she broke down in tears shortly after she finished her performance – despite having Guy, Jess and Rita turn their chairs for her.

In a sweet show of support, Guy took to the stage to help her overcome her fears – singing a duet of the song she’d just finished to give her more confidence.

“I loved that you did that for her,” Jess said afterwards.

“That was so beautiful.”
