What is Airline ticket scam and how it works
Airline ticket scam, as the name suggests, is flight ticket related scam where criminals claim to offer tickets at unbelievable prices via official looking websites or social networking platforms. These websites appear like official websites of the airlines, travel agencies or agents.
According to the report, criminals ask for the immediate payment, usually bank transfer, virtual currencies and even cash. Criminals use stolen credit cards to buy these tickets and then they also send these tickets to the people.
The question here is: How does this qualify for a scam when the ticket has been sent.
These scams, scammers pull to fund other types of scams which are more lethal. Another aspect of the airline ticket scam is if the owner of the stolen credit card reports it to the bank then the ticket will get canceled and the airline will cancel your ticket and you will be unable to travel and lose money at the same time.
Signs that the ticket sale is a fraud
Unusually low-ticket price: If the ticket price appears significantly cheaper than other options, exercise caution. Criminals may lure you with tempting bargains, aiming to profit fully from fraudulent schemes.
Last-minute departure dates: Beware of departure dates within the next few days. Fraudsters often sell fraudulently obtained tickets just a day or two before the flight, attempting to exploit the time gap before the legitimate cardholder detects and cancels the fraudulent transaction.
Payment methods: If you are requested to pay in cash or through a bank transfer, be wary. These payment methods provide little recourse in case of fraud, as your money is instantly gone.
Incomplete contact information: Check if the travel agency’s website or social media account provides comprehensive contact details, including a physical address and a landline telephone number. If not, conduct thorough research to verify the legitimacy and certification of the travel agency before making any purchases.
Tips for making safe purchases
Direct booking: Opt for purchasing airline tickets directly from the airline or through a reputable travel agency certified by your country’s relevant authorities.
Secure online transactions: Only make online ticket purchases from websites equipped with secure payment systems, indicated by “https” at the beginning of the web address.
Research the travel agency: Before committing to a purchase, thoroughly research the travel agency. Verify the legitimacy of their website, explore online reviews—both positive and negative—and confirm the availability of reliable contact options for addressing potential issues.
Review terms and conditions: Prior to finalizing any transaction, carefully review the terms and conditions, with a specific focus on the refund policy and associated processes.
